The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) promises to
revolutionize healthcare information management. Any organization that electronically stores or disseminates patient information must
begin taking steps to adhere to HIPAA's strict new security and privacy standards. Mandated enterprise-wide compliance initiatives
will require healthcare entities, to "re-architect" how they capture, store and transmit health data.
In addition to creating consumer protection for health care benefits, HIPAA will:
- Standardize financial and administrative health transactions for the public and private sectors
- Increase speed and efficiency,
- Cut the costs of delivering health care services, and
- Set minimum standards of protection for the storage, use, and transfer of protected health information (PHI).
